Amidst the embarassing revelations for the US Government with the WikiLeaks releases, a deadly trend has emerged. Government representatives have begun to voice approval for the execution of Wikileaks spokesman Julian Assange under the guise of protecting America. Not only is this an abhorrent abuse of power, but it is being disturbingly well received.

Much rhetoric has been thrown about by politicians and pundits alike. As these public officials scramble to find a means to align the world with their position, they will seemingly stop at nothing. Rather than focus on the subject of the story, the cable leaks, they have taken to derogatory personal attacks on the WikiLeaks spokesman. He has been called a hacker, a traitor, a terrorist, a sex offender, and more in an attempt to discredit the organization.

Wikileaks has been repeatedly described as both "traitorous" and "treasonous". This falsehood depicts a profound ignorance of America's laws on treason, as well as the overall facts of the situation. Wikileaks is no more a "traitor" than Deep Throat or the New York Times. While Wikileaks has published confidential information, it is merely doing so as a media outlet. Any actual crime that took place was committed by the persons who obtained the information initially and chose to distribute it.

"We haven't gone after this guy, we haven't tried to prosecute him, we haven't gotten our allies to go out and lock this guy up and bring him up on terrorism charges." - Rep Rick Santorum

"I think Assange should be assassinated, actually. I think Obama should put out a contract and maybe use a drone or something." - former PM Advisor Tom Flanagan

"We should treat Mr Assange the same way as other high-value terrorist targets: Kill him." - conservative columnist Jeffrey T Kuhner

"Why can't we use our various assets to harass, snatch or neutralize Julian Assange and his collaborators, wherever they are?" - former Chief of Staff William Kristol

Representative Candice Miller urged Congress and the President to take action, "It's time that the Obama administration treats WikiLeaks for what it is, a terrorist organization whose continued operation threatens our security. Shut it down, shut it down. It's time to shut down this terrorist organization, this terrorist website, WikiLeaks." She is not alone in this misguided view. Prominent news outlets have continued to spread this rhetoric, taking only brief opportunities to discuss the validity of the statement.

To be clear, terrorists employ violent attacks in an attempt to instill fear in their opposition. To refer to Wikileaks in this manner does a disservice to everyone that has died at the hands of a true terrorist.

We are entering into a new era of information availability, and WikiLeaks is our first bastion of truth. Make no mistake, this is not a war on Terror, but rather a war on Government Accountability. We cannot, and will not, be silenced. Our time has come to set aside complacency and make our voices heard. Anonymous stands with WikiLeaks to remind the world that noone can claim ownership of the truth.
